COLUMBUS, OH – Richard Jerel Doyle, 32, of Brooklyn, Ohio, will spend the next 8 years and 4 months behind bars after being sentenced to 100 months in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm. The sentence was handed down yesterday evening by Chief U.S. District Judge Edmund A. Sargus Jr., following a two-day trial in September that found Doyle guilty as charged.
The case stems from a terrifying incident on March 18, 2016, when a woman walking along Cleveland Avenue in Columbus was accosted by Doyle. According to court testimony, Doyle drove up beside her in a 1994 Cadillac Deville and assaulted her with a loaded firearm. The victim managed to escape and immediately dialed 911, providing a description that led police directly to Doyle.
Columbus Police officers quickly located Doyle driving along I-71 and pulled him over without incident. A search of the vehicle revealed a .380 caliber handgun and ammunition. The quick action of both the victim and responding officers was crucial in getting a dangerous offender – and a dangerous weapon – off the streets.
What makes this case particularly egregious is Doyle’s extensive criminal history. He was previously convicted in Cuyahoga County in 2010 on charges of drug trafficking and drug possession. Even further back, in 2005, Doyle was convicted of sexual battery and robbery. Federal law clearly prohibits convicted felons from possessing firearms or ammunition, a restriction Doyle blatantly ignored.
U.S. Attorney Benjamin C. Glassman, alongside Trevor Velinor, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and Columbus Police Chief Kimberley Jacobs, jointly announced the sentencing. Glassman specifically commended the collaborative investigation conducted by the ATF task force and the diligent work of Assistant U.S. Attorneys Salvador A. Dominguez and Jonathan J.C. Grey, who successfully prosecuted the case.
This conviction serves as a stark reminder that those with a history of violent offenses will be held accountable for illegally possessing firearms. Doyle’s actions endangered the public, and the length of his sentence reflects the seriousness of his crime and the need to protect the citizens of Ohio.
