PENSACOLA, FL – Dillon Devontrez Royster, 31, of Pensacola, is trading the Florida sun for a decade behind bars. The career criminal was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and illegally possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The sentence, handed down this week, is the culmination of a joint investigation that exposed a significant drug operation in Northwest Florida.
The bust went down on April 17, 2024, when members of the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) raided Royster’s residence. What they found wasn’t a simple stash – it was a full-blown operation. Law enforcement seized approximately 1,851 grams of methamphetamine, a dangerous amount of fentanyl (10 grams), and a cache of firearms. Royster clearly wasn’t just dealing drugs; he was armed and prepared for trouble.
U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Florida, John P. Heekin, didn’t mince words about the case. “I applaud the substantial efforts of our state and federal law enforcement partners to investigate, arrest, and help bring this drug trafficker to justice,” Heekin stated. He further tied the prosecution to the broader “Take Back America” initiative, a program championed by former President Donald J. Trump and former Attorney General Pam Bondi, aimed at aggressively targeting criminal offenders and reclaiming communities from violence and addiction.
ATF Tampa Field Division’s Assistant Special Agent in Charge, Cheryl Harrell, echoed the sentiment, calling the case “a huge win for public safety in Northwest Florida.” She emphasized the dangerous combination of armed drug trafficking and the importance of interagency cooperation. “This investigation demonstrates what can be accomplished when law enforcement agencies work together to remove an armed drug trafficker from our communities,” Harrell said. The streets of Pensacola are a little safer tonight because of this coordinated effort.
Assistant United States Attorney Jeffrey M. Tharp spearheaded the prosecution, building a solid case based on the evidence recovered during the raid. This case isn’t an isolated incident, but rather part of the larger “Operation Take Back America,” a nationwide push to dismantle cartels, transnational criminal organizations, and violent crime rings. The operation leverages the resources of the Department of Justice’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhoods.
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida, one of 94 offices nationwide, remains committed to prosecuting federal crimes. Public court documents related to the case are available on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida website. Royster’s decade-long sentence serves as a harsh reminder that dealing in poison and packing heat won’t be tolerated in the Sunshine State – or anywhere else under federal jurisdiction.
