Eduardo Cardona, Filing False Income Tax Returns, Pennsylvania 2023

A Pittsburgh man has been charged with filing false income tax returns for others, according to federal authorities.

Eduardo Cardona, 38, of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, was indicted by a federal grand jury on five counts of aiding or assisting in the preparation or filing of false federal income tax returns, United States Attorney Scott W. Brady announced today.

The indictment alleges that Cardona filed false Schedule C information on tax returns for other individuals, resulting in false refunds for the filers.

Each count carries a sentence of up to three years in prison, a fine of $250,000.00 or both. The actual sentence imposed will depend on the seriousness of the offenses and Cardona’s criminal history, if any.

Assistant United States Attorney Gregory C. Melucci is handling the prosecution of this case on behalf of the government. The Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation conducted the investigation leading to the indictment.

An indictment is an accusation, and Cardona is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The case will now proceed to trial, where the prosecution will present its evidence to a judge or jury.

The indictment highlights the importance of honest tax returns and the consequences of filing false information. It also serves as a reminder that the IRS takes tax crimes seriously and will work to hold those responsible accountable.

The case is a reminder that tax crimes can have serious consequences, not just for the individual but for the community as a whole. The IRS will continue to work to prevent and investigate tax crimes, and will bring charges against those who engage in such activities.
