Pittsburgh Man Jailed for 5 Years in Heroin Conspiracy
A Pittsburgh man has been sentenced to five years imprisonment followed by four years supervised release on his conviction of violating federal narcotics laws, announced United States Attorney David J. Hickton.
Chief United States District Judge Joy Flowers Conti imposed the sentence on Donald Freeman, age 25, for his involvement in a heroin conspiracy.
According to information presented to the court, from in and around December 2013, and continuing thereafter to in and around March 2014, Freeman conspired with others to distribute and possess with intent to distribute 100 grams or more of heroin, a Schedule I controlled substance.
Assistant United States Attorneys Amy L. Johnston and Cindy K. Chung prosecuted this case on behalf of the government. The case was a result of a federally administered Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) investigation.
The OCDETF program supplies critical federal funding and coordination that allows federal and state agencies to work together to successfully identify, investigate, and prosecute major interstate and international drug trafficking organizations and other criminal enterprises.
The task force is headed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and is comprised of members drawn from the FBI Greater Pittsburgh Safe Streets Task Force, including the Wilkinsburg Police Department, Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office, Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General, Munhall Police Department, Duquesne Police Department, Monroeville Police Department, Allegheny County Police Department, West Mifflin Police Department, and the Pittsburgh Police Department.
Freeman’s conviction serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat heroin distribution in our communities. As we continue to see the devastating effects of the opioid epidemic, it is crucial that we hold individuals accountable for their actions.
