JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Derrick Polk, 62, of Long Beach, California, is headed to federal prison for a decade after being sentenced for his role in a large-scale methamphetamine trafficking operation in Western Pennsylvania. The sentence, handed down by United States District Judge Marilyn J. Horan on September 24, 2025, reflects the gravity of Polk’s crimes: conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.
Polk won’t just be losing his freedom; he’s losing a fortune. Judge Horan ordered the forfeiture of $399,000 in U.S. currency, a firearm, and a lavish collection of Rolex watches and jewelry, collectively valued at over $150,000. This wasn’t a small-time operation, and the feds made sure Polk’s ill-gotten gains were seized.
According to court documents, Polk was a key player in the conspiracy from April 2019 through July 2021. Investigators revealed that Polk conspired to distribute at least 500 grams of methamphetamine within the Western District of Pennsylvania. In April 2021, he was caught red-handed possessing another 500 grams with clear intent to distribute. The case was built on solid evidence, including intercepted communications obtained through a federal wiretap, proving Polk was actively sourcing and distributing the deadly drug.
Acting United States Attorney Troy Rivetti made it clear this wasn’t a solo effort. The successful prosecution was the result of a multi-agency task force. The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Laurel Highlands Resident Agency and Homeland Security Investigations led the charge, with support from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Internal Revenue Service–Criminal Investigation, United States Postal Inspection Service, Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, Pennsylvania State Police, and numerous county and local police departments.
This case falls under the umbrella of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF), a program specifically designed to dismantle major drug trafficking organizations. Rivetti emphasized that OCDETF’s prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven approach is crucial in taking down these criminal networks. They don’t just arrest street-level dealers; they target the kingpins, like Polk, and cut off the supply chain.
Assistant United States Attorney Maureen Sheehan-Balchon skillfully prosecuted the case on behalf of the government. Polk will also serve five years of supervised release following his 120-month prison sentence. This conviction sends a clear message: trafficking large quantities of methamphetamine in Western Pennsylvania will be met with swift and severe consequences. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and others like it, exposing the underbelly of federal crime.
