Ponder, Texas Man Pleads Guilty To Transporting Stolen Vehicle
David Leon Smith II, a 28-year-old man from Ponder, Texas, has pleaded guilty to transporting a stolen vehicle and possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.
According to court documents, on November 26, 2017, Smith transported a 2001 Dodge Ram pickup truck, VIN ending in 520331, from Oklahoma to Texas, knowing it to be stolen. The vehicle was valued at a significant amount, but the exact figure was not disclosed.
Smith also pleaded guilty to possessing two firearms: a Beretta Model A300 Outlander 12 gauge shotgun, serial number RU004247, and a Remington Model Seven .22-250 caliber rifle, serial number 7857999. Both firearms had been shipped and transported in interstate commerce.
The charges against Smith arose from an investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The case was prosecuted by First Assistant United States Attorney Christopher Wilson.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Kimberly E. West accepted Smith’s plea and ordered a presentence investigation report. Smith faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000, or both, for each count.
The case is a reminder of the importance of enforcing laws related to vehicle theft and firearm possession. Authorities continue to work tirelessly to prevent and investigate such crimes.
As the investigation and prosecution of Smith continue, the community is left to wonder how such crimes can occur and what can be done to prevent them in the future.
