KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – In a landmark ruling against online predators, Michael Robert Potter, 38, of Rocky Top, TN, was handed down an 188-month sentence by the Honorable Thomas A. Varlan in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee. The sentence includes 15 years in federal prison followed by 10 years of supervised release.
According to court documents, Potter pleaded guilty to distributing child pornography, a violation of 18 U.S.C. § 2252A(a)(2). His arrest came after an extensive investigation by the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security Investigations – Internet Crimes Against Children (HSI-ICAC) Task Force.
From April to May 2023, federal agents conducted online investigations that led them to Potter’s IP address. This address harbored thousands of files depicting child pornography and abuse. A subsequent search warrant revealed over 20,000 images and 500 videos on Potter’s computer equipment.
The investigation was spearheaded by HSI-ICAC Task Force Officer Thomas Evans, in collaboration with the Knoxville Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer Kolman represented the United States during the prosecution.
