PRESTON, CT – Joel Huntsman, 37, a resident of Preston, Connecticut, has admitted to the sickening distribution of child sex abuse material. The guilty plea, entered today before U.S. District Judge Victor A. Bolden in New Haven, confirms Huntsman’s involvement in a depraved network of exploitation. This case, like too many others, highlights the dark underbelly of online anonymity and the devastating harm inflicted on vulnerable children.
The investigation began in June 2022 when the Kik mobile messenger application flagged suspicious activity and submitted a CyberTip to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). The tip identified a user – later confirmed to be Huntsman, who also went by aliases “Jay Huntsman,” “Joel Feser,” and “Jay Blackburn” – as distributing disturbing images and videos to another user on the platform. This initial alert triggered a swift response from federal authorities.
On November 2, 2022, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, acting on a court-authorized warrant, raided Huntsman’s Preston residence. The search yielded multiple electronic devices, including two mobile phones. A forensic analysis of these devices quickly confirmed the initial suspicions: they contained a trove of child sex abuse images and videos. The evidence was irrefutable, painting a grim picture of Huntsman’s illicit activities.
Huntsman was taken into custody on January 26, 2023, and has remained detained ever since. Today’s guilty plea centers around the charge of distribution of child pornography. This federal offense carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison, and a maximum potential sentence of twenty years. The actual sentence will be determined at a later date, which has not yet been scheduled.
U.S. Attorney David X. Sullivan for the District of Connecticut made the announcement, emphasizing the commitment of his office to protecting children. The investigation was a collaborative effort between the FBI and the Connecticut State Police. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Daniel E. Cummings and Nancy V. Gifford are prosecuting the case, ensuring that justice is served.
This prosecution is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Childhood Initiative, a nationwide program dedicated to combating child sexual abuse and exploitation.
