John Willis Jones, a Prichard resident with a history of violent behavior, has been handed down a 57-month prison sentence for his role in a family firearm dispute. United States Attorney Richard W. Moore announced the sentencing on April 18, 2019.
Jones was spotted running down a Prichard street with a gun in October 2018, according to court documents. When questioned by police, Jones confessed to shooting at his nephew during a heated family argument. The dispute stemmed from an incident where one of his nephews pointed a firearm at another relative.
Upon arrest, Jones led officers to the crime scene, where three shell casings matching the recovered firearm were found. During a post-arrest interview, Jones waived his Miranda rights and admitted that he knew possessing a gun was illegal as a convicted felon, but believed it was worth returning to prison for his family.
Jones had prior convictions for Possession of Marijuana in June 2018 and Possession of a Short Barreled Shotgun from July 1995. His firearm rights were not restored at the time of the October 3, 2018 incident.
The investigation was conducted by the Mobile County Street Enforcement Narcotics Team, Prichard Police Department, Mobile Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Mobile Field office. Assistant United States Attorney Christopher Baugh prosecuted the case for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Alabama.
Jones’ sentence serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by repeat felons with access to firearms, and the importance of law enforcement efforts in holding such individuals accountable.
