Daniel Shane Tyrolf, a 35-year-old Raleigh man, was sentenced to 17.5 years in federal prison for distributing child pornography online. The sentencing came after Tyrolf pleaded guilty to the offense on November 3, 2025. The investigation began when Kik social media reported to the National Center of Missing and Exploited Children that one of its users had distributed child sexual abuse material on its platform on multiple occasions, with IP addresses tracing back to Tyrolf’s residence and workplace, Tyrolf Automotives, LLC.

The Wake County Sheriff’s Office and Knightdale Police Department joined forces with the FBI to investigate Tyrolf, executing search warrants on his Kik accounts and discovering nearly 100 files of child sexual abuse material uploaded in private and group chats. Further search warrants at Tyrolf’s residence and workplace on April 29, 2025, uncovered hundreds of files of child sexual abuse material across multiple accounts, including over 600 images of prepubescent children on a single tablet.

Law enforcement and prosecutors hailed the sentence as a significant victory in the fight against child predators. U.S. Attorney Ellis Boyle emphasized the commitment to protecting children and holding offenders accountable, stating that law enforcement will ‘stomp them out with no mercy.’ Chief Capps of the Knightdale Police Department and Sheriff Will also praised the collaborative efforts of the agencies involved, underscoring the importance of protecting children from online threats.

Tyrolf’s sentencing includes 25 years of supervised release and a $5,000 assessment, in addition to the 17.5-year prison term. The case highlights the critical role of collaboration between federal, state, and local agencies in combating child exploitation and ensuring that those who engage in such heinous activities face justice.
