HARRISBURG – Ramon Tavarez-Ramirez, a 50-year-old previously deported alien, faced justice this week when United States District Court Judge Sylvia Rambo sentenced him to eight months’ imprisonment followed by one year of supervised release for illegal re-entry into the country.
On November 30, 2021, Ramirez was caught red-handed in Adams County, Pennsylvania. His transgression? Illegal re-entry after being deported in February 2003 following a felony conviction. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania had no qualms about bringing him to justice.
According to United States Attorney John C. Gurganus, Ramirez slipped back into the U.S. under the radar and evaded immigration officers’ scrutiny. His downfall came when he was apprehended on March 21, 2021, for driving under the influence by the Eastern Adams Regional Police Department.
The case against Ramirez was a collaborative effort, with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) leading the investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Joanne M. Sanderson handled the prosecution, ensuring Ramirez’s sentence reflected the seriousness of his crime.
This sentencing serves as a stark reminder that illegal re-entry is no laughing matter. The Middle District of Pennsylvania stands firm in its commitment to enforcing immigration laws and protecting the integrity of our nation’s borders.
Ramon Tavarez-Ramirez’s illegal re-entry sentence has been meted out, and his days of evading justice are over. His fate serves as a cautionary tale for those who would consider similar actions in the future.
