United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell has announced the sentencing of Andre Gibson, a 46-year-old man from Rapid City, South Dakota, who was convicted of Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance.
Gibson, found guilty in federal court, was sentenced by District Judge Karen E. Schreier on July 25, 2025, to serve 17 years and six months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The defendant had been indicted for Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance by a federal grand jury in May 2024. He pleaded guilty on May 9, 2025. Gibson’s criminal enterprise involved receiving multiple packages of methamphetamine through the U.S. Mail Service from surrounding states and distributing them within South Dakota.
According to prosecutors, Gibson distributed between 1.5 and 5 kilograms (between 3 and 11 pounds) of methamphetamine in the Rapid City area with the help of others both inside and outside of South Dakota. “More and more often, criminals are shipping narcotics through the U.S. mail system,” stated U.S. Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell. “Our federal, state, and local law enforcement partners have been highly effective in intercepting these packages and tracking down suspects.”
This case was a collaborative effort between the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the South Dakota Highway Patrol, the Rapid City Police Department, and the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward C. Tarbay prosecuted the case, leading to Gibson being immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
“Andre Gibson’s sentence reflects the seriousness of his actions and sends a strong message that drug trafficking will not be tolerated in our community,” concluded U.S. Attorney Ramsdell.
