Convicted Felon Accused of Possessing Firearm
Randy Rivera, a 34-year-old Springfield man, has been indicted on federal firearms charges. Rivera, a convicted felon, is accused of possessing a Smith & Wesson, model M&P 9C, 9mm pistol, and 17 rounds of 9mm ammunition on January 4, 2013.
According to the indictment, Rivera’s possession of the firearm and ammunition violates federal law. As a convicted felon, Rivera is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.
The indictment is the result of an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Drug Enforcement Administration. United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz, Daniel J. Kumor, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Boston Field Division, and John Arvanitis, Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration, Boston Field Division, announced the indictment.
Rivera faces a mandatory sentence of 15 years in prison, five years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine if convicted. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin O’Regan of Ortiz’s Springfield Branch Office.
The indictment is an allegation, and Rivera is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
Rivera’s indictment serves as a reminder of the importance of enforcing federal firearms laws and holding individuals accountable for their actions.
The investigation and prosecution of Rivera’s case demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement agencies to keeping communities safe and preventing the proliferation of firearms in the wrong hands.
