Roger Slaughter, 35, of Perry, Florida, is headed to federal prison for five years after pleading guilty to possession with intent to distribute 5 grams or more of actual methamphetamine. The sentence, handed down in federal court, marks the end of a narcotics probe that exposed a steady flow of crystal meth through Taylor County’s underground drug trade.
Slaughter will serve five years behind bars followed by four years of supervised release, a penalty meted out by federal judges who continue to crack down on mid-level traffickers fueling the region’s addiction crisis. His guilty plea spared a trial but offered no leniency in sentencing, as prosecutors emphasized the quantity of drugs and presence of firearms in arguing for a stiff penalty.
The case unfolded through a joint operation led by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Taylor County Sheriff’s Office, and Perry Police Department. Investigators made controlled buys from Slaughter before executing a search warrant at his residence on February 3, 2021. Inside, they seized approximately 25 grams of methamphetamine, 58 grams of marijuana, multiple firearms, ammunition, and a stash of cash consistent with drug proceeds.
Acting United States Attorney Jason R. Coody, overseeing the Northern District of Florida, defended the prosecution as a necessary strike against drug distribution networks. “This sentence is a reflection of our commitment to work with our state and local partners in our on-going effort to deal with the sale of narcotics in our community,” Coody said. “We will continue to work toward our common goal of protecting our community from this destructive criminal behavior.”
Assistant U.S. Attorney Gary Milligan prosecuted the case, built on evidence gathered by the DEA, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and local law enforcement. The collaboration underscores the federal government’s strategy of pooling resources to dismantle drug operations that cross jurisdictional lines and threaten public safety.
