Convicted Money Launderer Sentenced to Five Years in Federal Prison

A Sioux Falls woman has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for her role in a money laundering conspiracy. Rosa Elena Magana Madrigal, 64, was sentenced on August 15, 2022 by U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier.

Madrigal was convicted of Conspiracy to Launder Monetary Instruments and was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

According to court documents, Madrigal knowingly and intentionally combined, conspired, confederated, and agreed together with others to conduct financial transactions affecting interstate and foreign commerce. The transactions involved wire/money transfers, which were related to the proceeds of a specified unlawful activity – a conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance.

Madrigal voluntarily joined the agreement in 2019 and continued to conduct financial transactions with her co-conspirators until May 11, 2021. During this time, she learned that the money she was depositing was proceeds of a controlled substance conspiracy.

This case was investigated by the IRS Criminal Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Sioux Falls Area Drug Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Hodges prosecuted the case.

Madrigal was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. The investigation and prosecution of this case demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement to disrupting and dismantling organized crime networks that engage in money laundering and other financial crimes.
