PIERRE, SD – It’s a tough sentence for a Rosebud woman who laid hands on the law. Jamie Leader Charge, 32, from the Rosebud Indian Reservation, faced federal charges after she put her boot to a federal officer in St. Francis on November 5, 2024.
Today, U.S. District Judge Eric C. Shulte made it clear that assault has consequences. He sentenced Leader Charge to time served in custody through August 23, 2025—a total of approximately four months—and then ordered her to serve three years of supervised release. The court also mandated a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
This chapter began when Leader Charge was causing chaos at a St. Francis residence. Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services (RSTLES) officer showed up and made a routine arrest. But things took a turn when the suspect fought back, kicking the officer in the process. This defiance led to federal charges for Assaulting, Resisting, and Impeding a Federal Officer.
Leader Charge was indicted by a federal grand jury in December 2024 and pleaded guilty on May 12, 2025. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson took charge of the prosecution, with the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Service investigating the case. The defendant was swiftly remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
The sentence handed down today is a stark reminder that when you take on federal law enforcement, there are serious stakes involved. Leader Charge’s actions have cost her nearly half a year behind bars and three years keeping an eye on the streets.
