Salahudin Mitchell, Distribution of Fentanyl, Virginia 2021

A Sterling man has pleaded guilty to distributing fentanyl in Petersburg, Virginia. Salahudin Mitchell, 39, admitted to distributing more than 56 grams of a mixture and substance containing fentanyl on July 21, 2021.

According to court documents, Mitchell’s drug trafficking activities were first discovered by law enforcement in late 2020. Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Virginia State Police, and Petersburg Bureau of Police became aware of Mitchell’s activities, which were taking place in Petersburg and elsewhere.

A series of nine controlled purchases of fentanyl were made from Mitchell between April 2021 and October 2021. These purchases were carried out by law enforcement, who were working to build a case against Mitchell.

Mitchell is scheduled to be sentenced on July 29 and faces a mandatory minimum of 5 years in prison, as well as a maximum term of 40 years. Actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties.

The case was investigated by the ATF, DEA, Virginia State Police, Petersburg Bureau of Police, and the FBI’s Richmond Field Office. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia is prosecuting the case.

Special assistance was provided by the Petersburg Bureau of Police in the investigation and prosecution of Mitchell’s case.
