Bank Heist Mastermind Lands 15-Year Sentence
A brazen bank robbery in Berwick, Maine, has landed a Sanford man behind bars for 15 years. Michel D’Angelo, 35, was sentenced to the lengthy prison term for the daring heist at Kennebunk Savings Bank, where he made off with a cool $1,300.
According to court records, D’Angelo, disguised as a woman, stormed into the bank on September 21, 2012, sporting a wig, sunglasses, and a purse. He also donned white surgical tape to conceal a ‘Real Deal’ tattoo on his fingers and a pink scarf to hide a ‘Karma’ tattoo on his neck.
The would-be thief verbally demanded cash from the teller, claiming he had a bomb in his bag and would set it off if the teller pressed any buttons. D’Angelo’s elaborate disguise and threat tactics ultimately proved no match for investigators, who pieced together the evidence to bring him to justice.
As a result of his prior violent crime convictions, D’Angelo was subject to an enhanced sentence as a career offender. The investigation was a collaborative effort involving the Berwick and Kittery Police Departments and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
D’Angelo pleaded guilty to the charges on February 13, 2014, and was subsequently sentenced by Judge Nancy Torresen. The three-year supervised release that follows his prison term will keep a watchful eye on D’Angelo’s activities in the years to come.
Assistant United States Attorney Darcie N. McElwee is available for comment on the case, with her contact information listed as (207) 780-3257.
As the Grimy Times continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Michel D’Angelo’s crime, one thing is clear: justice has been served in this high-profile bank robbery case.
