Javon Edwards, a 31-year-old from Savannah, Georgia, was handed down a 37-month prison term for his illegal possession of a machinegun. The sentence came after Edwards entered a guilty plea in April 2025.
Edwards appeared before Chief Judge R. Stan Baker on September 11, 2025, marking the culmination of a case that saw the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Georgia impose additional penalties of 3 years of supervised release following his prison term.
United States Attorney Margaret Heap highlighted the growing concern over illegal conversion devices that turn semi-automatic pistols into fully automatic weapons. ‘We will continue to work with our state and federal partners to apprehend these criminals,’ Heap stated, underscoring the severity of the crime.
ATF Acting Assistant Special Agent Robert Davis emphasized the public safety threat posed by such weaponry, saying, ‘The illegal possession of machineguns is not just a violation of the law; it endangers our communities. We will continue to pursue those who threaten public safety.’
This investigation was part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a U.S. Department of Justice program aiming to reduce violent crime and enhance neighborhood security. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Savannah Police Department collaborated on the case, which was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Makeia R. Jonese.
