New Orleans – Scott P. Richard, a systems engineer from Raceland, La., was handed a year and a day in prison after being sentenced for embezzling nearly half a million dollars from his former employer, a Houma-based company identified as ‘Company A’.
Richard, 48, pleaded guilty to access device fraud and admitted to using Company A’s corporate credit card for personal gain. He concocted false invoices for a shell company under his control and used the card to make fraudulent purchases totaling $526,569.42 between January 1, 2012, and September 27, 2021.
According to court records, Richard also made unauthorized purchases of equipment with his corporate card for personal use. His deceitful actions were discovered by investigators, leading to the charges against him.
U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation, New Orleans Field Office, for their work on the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew R. Payne handled the prosecution for the Financial Crimes Unit.
In addition to his prison term, Richard was ordered to pay $526,569.42 in restitution to Company A. Judge Eldon E. Fallon also sentenced him to three years of supervised release and a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.
Richard’s case serves as a stark reminder of the potential for white-collar crime within the tech industry, highlighting the necessity for stringent oversight and internal controls.
