SCRANTON- A grim chapter in the war on drugs unfolded in Lackawanna County as Emmanuel Batista, 32, of Scranton, was sentenced to 151 months behind bars for his role as a drug kingpin. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Malachy E Mannion on July 1, 2024.
Batista, who once ran DMB Dumpster and Construction Company in Scranton, Pennsylvania, used the company’s name to mask his true activities from November 2022 to January 2023. During this period, law enforcement conducted multiple controlled purchases of fentanyl, totaling over 400 grams, and uncovered Batista’s distribution network for methamphetamine as well.
In addition to using a vacant property as a stash house for drugs, Batista was alleged to have paid some of his employees with drugs. His brazen operation saw him distributing significant quantities of the致命 substances in just three months.
The investigation into Batista’s activities was led by Homeland Security Investigations and the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, Bureau of Narcotics Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jenny P. Roberts and Senior Deputy Attorney General Michelle Hardik were instrumental in bringing this case to justice.
This high-profile case is a part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence by fostering trust and legitimacy within communities. Launched on May 26, 2021, the Department’s strategic enforcement priorities have been focused on making neighborhoods safer for everyone.
As Batista faces his sentence, law enforcement agencies across Pennsylvania are hoping this sends a strong message to those who seek to profit from drug trafficking. The grim reality of Batista’s downfall serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against illegal substances in our communities.
