A 54-year-old Harrisburg man, Robert Hiler, has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for failing to register as a sex offender. Hiler was convicted of indecent assault, indecent exposure, and corruption of minors in 1995, requiring him to register for life under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). From June 2019 to January 2025, Hiler failed to register after moving from Pennsylvania to California. The US Marshals Service investigated the case, which was prosecuted by Assistant US Attorney Michael Scalera.
Hiler’s failure to register was a serious offense, and his sentence reflects the importance of complying with SORNA. The law requires sex offenders to register their whereabouts with authorities to ensure public safety. By failing to register, Hiler put the community at risk and undermined the purpose of the law.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children. Hiler’s sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of failing to register as a sex offender and the importance of protecting children from exploitation.
Hiler will also serve seven years of supervised release following his prison sentence. The sentence was imposed by US District Judge Karoline Mehalchick, who recognized the seriousness of Hiler’s offense and the need to hold him accountable.
