Lafayette Man Sentenced for Gun Crime
Lafayette, LA – In a shocking turn of events, Shawn D’Anthony Brown, 21, of Lafayette, was sentenced to 21 months in prison for illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition after having previously been convicted of two felonies.
According to court documents, on September 27, 2015, Lafayette police stopped a black four-door vehicle not using headlights on Celeste Street. Brown was searched, and a loaded .32 caliber revolver spray-painted gold was found in his front right pocket. This discovery led to further investigation, which revealed that he had previously been convicted of two felonies.
The investigation and prosecution of Brown’s case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at promoting firearm safety and reducing firearm crimes by preventing the possession and use of firearms by dangerous and persistent felons and others not authorized to possess a firearm.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel J. McCoy prosecuted the case, and the ATF and the Lafayette Police Department conducted the investigation.
Brown was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Donald E. Walter to 21 months in prison and three years of supervised release.
