Shawn Isom Sentenced to 70 Months in Prison for Heroin Trafficking
SCRANTON, Pennsylvania – In a major blow to the heroin trade in Lackawanna County, Shawn Isom, 45, of Scranton, was sentenced to 70 months’ imprisonment on February 27, 2017, by U.S. District Court Judge Robert D. Mariani for trafficking in heroin.
According to United States Attorney Bruce D. Brandler, Isom pleaded guilty to possession with the intent to distribute between 80 and 100 grams of heroin, equivalent to approximately 3,000-4,000 retail bags of heroin, in Lackawanna County during September 2015. This heinous crime was committed while Isom was on supervised release for a previous federal drug conspiracy.
Isom’s sentence consisted of a 50-month prison sentence for the heroin trafficking offense and a 20-month prison sentence for his supervised release violation. He was also ordered to serve six years on supervised release following his prison sentence, bringing the total sentence to 9 years.
The investigation was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Pennsylvania State Police, and the Scranton Police. Assistant United States Attorney Francis P. Sempa prosecuted the case.
This case was brought as part of a district-wide initiative to combat the nationwide epidemic regarding the use and distribution of heroin. Led by the United States Attorney’s Office, the Heroin Initiative targets heroin traffickers operating in the Middle District of Pennsylvania and is part of a coordinated effort among federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who commit heroin-related offenses.
Isom’s sentence serves as a reminder that the war on heroin will not be won overnight, but with continued efforts from law enforcement and the community, we can make a difference. The Grimy Times will continue to bring you updates on this and other cases as they unfold.
