Silvano Marez Rios, Identity Theft and Fraud, Iowa 2022

A Mexican citizen was sentenced to federal prison for identity theft and fraud in West Liberty, IA. Silvano Marez Rios, 50, a West Liberty resident, was sentenced to 33 months in prison for fraud in connection with immigration documents, aggravated identity theft, misuse of a social security number, and illegal reentry.

Rios was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release to follow his prison term.

According to court documents, Rios was found in West Liberty after having been deported or removed by immigration authorities.

He used the identity of a United States citizen to obtain employment and incurred medical expenses. He also committed numerous driving offenses under the false identity.

After working under one false identity, Rios used the identity and social security card of another United States citizen to obtain employment.

Rios pleaded guilty to the four charges on March 30, 2022.

US Attorney Richard D. Westphal made the announcement.

The investigation was led by the Department of Homeland Security Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, Iowa Department of Transportation, and West Liberty Police Department, and was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.
