Methamphetamine Conspiracy Taints Perry County
Three residents of Pinckneyville, Illinois, have been handed down harsh sentences for their roles in a methamphetamine conspiracy that spanned multiple counties.
Skyler Elder, 25, Joseph D. Smith, 42, and Jamie L. Smith, 34, all pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine, with Elder also charged with possessing pseudoephedrine knowing it would be used to manufacture the illicit substance.
According to investigators, Elder was a methamphetamine cook, with the Smiths and others providing him with pseudoephedrine for production. Joseph Smith’s residence in Pinckneyville was also used for the manufacture of methamphetamine.
The investigation, led by the Perry County Sheriff’s Office and the Perry County Drug Task Force, uncovered evidence of the conspiracy, which occurred between 2012 and December 2014 in Perry, Jackson, Randolph, and Franklin Counties.
Skyler Elder was sentenced to 100 months in federal prison, three years of supervised release, and fined $725.00. Joseph Smith received a 60-month prison sentence, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $825.00. Jamie Smith was sentenced to 54 months in prison, three years of supervised release, and fined $800.00.
The total amount of pseudoephedrine possessed by the defendants was 364.16 grams. Skyler Elder was found responsible for 206.56 grams, while Joseph and Jamie Smith were responsible for 157.6 grams.
Co-defendants Herman Sims, Jr. and Jamie Trzinski have previously been sentenced to 84 months and 57 months, respectively, for their roles in the conspiracy.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Amanda A. Robertson.
