SOUTH BEND – A veteran’s fraudulent claims have landed Jake Gregory Aarreberg, 50, in hot water. The South Bend resident was sentenced by Judge Cristal C. Brisco for the theft of government funds, according to a statement from United States Attorney Clifford D. Johnson.
Aarreberg was sentenced to two years of probation, eight months of home detention, and ordered to pay $226,389.56 in restitution to the victims. His scheme siphoned over $96,000 in VA medical benefits and $129,000 in Social Security disability benefits by falsely claiming he was a disabled military veteran.
Documents in the case revealed Aarreberg’s fraudulent activities spanned from 2005 to 2023. He presented counterfeit military service records to obtain these unwarranted benefits. His deception was as chilling as it was brazen, using his status as a vet for personal gain.
The investigation into Aarreberg’s schemes was a joint effort by the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General and the Social Security Administration Office of Inspector General. Assistant United States Attorney Luke N. Reilander handled the prosecution.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the lengths some will go to for financial gain, even at the expense of the integrity of our nation’s veterans’ benefits system. Aarreberg now faces the consequences of his deception as he begins his sentence under Brisco’s watchful eye.
