Vance McIlwain, Armed Assault, District of Columbia 2024

In a brazen daytime attack, Vance McIlwain, 34, and Kenneth Johnson, 33, unleashed a hail of bullets on a Southeast D.C. resident, firing over 15 rounds from a gun they’d retrieved from an apartment building hallway.

The victim, who survived but suffered multiple gunshot wounds, including to the chest, lower back, and knee, was sitting on a front porch when McIlwain began firing at him on November 8, 2024, at 3:50 p.m.

CCTV footage captured the duo conspiring to shoot the victim, with Johnson passing a cross-body bag containing the gun to McIlwain. They later returned to the scene, with McIlwain handing the gun to Johnson before fleeing.

McIlwain pleaded guilty to aggravated assault while armed and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, while Johnson pleaded guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro announced the sentencing, with Judge Jason Park handing down a 10-year prison sentence to McIlwain and a 6-year prison sentence to Johnson.
