ST. LOUIS – The grim streets of St. Louis have once again been marked by a sense of dread as Malachiah Williams, 22, pleaded guilty to two counts of armed carjacking and two counts of brandishing a firearm. The defendant appeared before U.S. District Judge Richard Webber, who accepted his plea and scheduled the sentencing for July 30, 2019.
According to court documents, on July 25, 2018, Williams approached a man at gunpoint in front of a residence on Cote Brilliante. After forcing the victim out of his vehicle, he stole it and vanished without a trace. Just over a week later, on July 31, 2018, Williams targeted a mother and her four-year-old daughter near Dr. Martin Luther King Drive. He forced them from their car with a semi-automatic firearm before making off with the vehicle.
Carjacking in Missouri is no joke; if convicted, Williams faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 on each count. The firearms charges add a mandatory minimum sentence of seven years, with the potential for life imprisonment, and another fine of $250,000, consecutive to any other sentence imposed. The prosecution and defense have agreed to recommend a sentence of 15 years imprisonment.
The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department led the investigation into these chilling events, which Assistant United States Attorney Tom Mehan is now prosecuting with fervent determination.
Williams’s actions have not gone unpunished; his plea and anticipated sentence send a stark message to those who would seek to terrorize our communities through violent crime. As the legal process moves forward, many are left wondering what kind of justice Williams will face for his heinous acts.
