ST. LOUIS – In a stunning turn of events, Matthew Ortega, 34, from St. Louis County, Missouri, has confessed to the armed robbery of a convenience store located on Hillsboro-House Springs Road in Jefferson County. The crime took place in 2023, and it was a violent one, with Ortega pointing a Glock handgun at the clerk and demanding cash from the register.
Ortega, who wore a motorcycle helmet during the heist, made his getaway on a distinctive Suzuki motorcycle. His luck ran out three days later when he was involved in an accident while riding the same bike, wearing the same helmet and gloves. Police recovered the firearm used in the robbery, leading to Ortega’s arrest.
Pledging guilty in U.S. District Court in St. Louis on Thursday, Ortega faces one count of robbery and one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence. The defendant is set for sentencing on September 18th, with both the prosecution and defense recommending an 11-year prison term.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was instrumental in investigating this case, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicholas Lake is handling the prosecution. This incident is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence across communities.
Project Safe Neighborhoods, launched on May 26, 2021, focuses on fostering trust in communities, supporting violence prevention organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring the outcomes. PSN’s efforts have contributed to making neighborhoods safer for everyone.
