⏱ 2 min read

In the early morning hours of December 1, 2025, a horrific crime unfolded on a New York City subway car. Hiram Carrero, 19, boarded a train at the 34th Street – Penn Station stop and set a sleeping man on fire using a piece of paper. The victim, who was locked inside the car as the train departed, suffered life-threatening injuries as the fire engulfed his legs and part of the train car.

Thanks to the quick response of first responders at the 42nd Street – Times Square station, the victim’s life was saved. Carrero, who had stepped back onto the platform as the doors closed, was later apprehended and charged with arson. On March 5, 2026, he pled guilty to the crime.

U.S. District Judge Lewis J. Liman sentenced Carrero to 66 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. The sentence reflects the severity of the crime, which was described by U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton as ‘breathtaking, horrific, and unconscionable.’ Clayton emphasized that subway safety is a top priority for law enforcement and that those who terrorize New Yorkers will face swift justice.

Carrero’s sentence serves as a warning to others who would consider committing such heinous crimes. The incident highlights the importance of vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies, including the NYPD and FDNY, in keeping the public safe.
