The grim saga of Tahlequah’s Chuck Allen Eastham, 41, took a darker turn as he entered a guilty plea in federal court. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma revealed that Eastham has been charged with Felon in Possession of a Firearm, a violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 922(g)(1).
The charges stem from an investigation led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The defendant was indicted in March 2014 for possessing a Marlin (Glenfield) Model 30A, 30-30 Caliber lever action rifle that had traveled across state lines.
On October 24, 2013, within the Eastern District of Oklahoma, Eastham’s possession was deemed to be in and affecting commerce. The charge is serious, as it follows a previous conviction for an offense with a prison term exceeding one year.
The hearing was presided over by Magistrate Judge Kimberly E. West in Muskogee. As of now, Eastham remains in the custody of the United States Marshal Service until sentencing can be determined.
Punishment under the law could carry up to 10 years imprisonment and/or a fine of $250,000. Assistant United States Attorney Kyle Waters represented the interests of the United States during the proceedings.
This guilty plea marks yet another chapter in the ongoing battle against gun crime in Oklahoma. The Tahlequah community awaits the outcome with a sense of justice yet to be served.
