Five hardcore drug traffickers from Tampa have been sent to federal prison after pleading guilty to conspiring to distribute heroin. United States Attorney A. Lee Bentley, III announced the sentencing of Edward McKenzie (40, Tampa), George Perdigon, A/K/A “Lee,” (48, Tampa), and Jesse Greer, A/K/A “Alex,” (40, Tampa). These individuals face a mandatory minimum sentence of five years, up to 40 years in federal prison.
Michael Regan (40, Sun City Center) has been handed a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment. Gregory Phelps (61, Tampa), who also faces a mandatory minimum penalty of 10 years, up to life, agreed to forfeit the property at 3608 West Oklahoma Avenue in Tampa – a hotbed for heroin activity.
The plea agreements reveal that this group was part of a drug trafficking organization operating in South Tampa. They transported heroin from New York City, storing and distributing it from the West Oklahoma Avenue residence. Purchasers even used the home as a site for heroin use.
During an intense investigation by the Tampa Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration, undercover detectives purchased heroin from the conspirators. A major breakthrough came during a traffic stop of McKenzie and Perdigon on April 22, 2016, where they seized solid heroin and hundreds of baggies packed for distribution.
Assistant United States Attorney Dan Baeza is handling the prosecution of this case. The community of Tampa is relieved to see these criminals held accountable for their actions.
As word spreads about the sentences handed down, there is a renewed sense of hope among law enforcement and local communities that such heinous crimes will be severely punished.
