Tavon Davis Sentenced to 14 Years for Fatal Beating in Northeast Washington
A Washington D.C. man has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for his role in a fatal beating in Northeast Washington in June 2017. Tavon Davis, 27, pleaded guilty in July 2021 to charges of voluntary manslaughter while armed and assault with a dangerous weapon.
According to the government’s evidence, Davis killed Michael Vest, 29, on the porch of a residence in the 1300 block of Trinidad Avenue NE using a wooden object to strike him in the head multiple times. Police were called at approximately 8 a.m. on June 28, 2017, and Vest was pronounced dead a short time later.
Davis was arrested by the Metropolitan Police Department on June 30, 2017, and held at the D.C. Jail while awaiting trial. On July 3, 2020, he stabbed another inmate in the neck using a homemade knife, resulting in serious injuries to the victim’s arms.
U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department Robert J. Contee III commended the work of those who investigated the case, including the Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The Honorable Marisa Demeo accepted the plea and sentenced Davis to 9 1/2 to 14 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sarah Santiago and Prava Palacharla investigated and prosecuted the case, while Victim/Witness Advocate Jennifer Clark, Investigative Analyst Zachary McMenamin, and Paralegal Specialist Lashone Samuels worked on the matter from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Tavon Davis’s sentence brings an end to a lengthy and complex case that involved multiple crimes and victims. The case serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of violent crime in our community.
