Cameron Summers, Tax Fraud, Wisconsin 2020

⏱ 2 min read

Cameron Summers, a Milwaukee tax preparer, has been sentenced to one year and one day in prison for filing over 400 false tax returns, claiming fake expenses, credits, and refunds for his clients between 2020 and 2022. Summers worked at a tax preparation business in Milwaukee, using his name and preparer tax identification number to file the fraudulent returns. He inflated refund amounts by including false business expenses, Sick and Family Leave Credits, Fuel Credits, and Educational Tax Credits, resulting in a loss of over $1.1 million to the IRS.

Summers’ scheme was uncovered by the IRS, Criminal Investigation Division, which found that he had made notations on some returns stating that he had ‘boosted’ the refund amount. In an interview with the IRS, Summers admitted to using whatever numbers were available to get a big refund. U.S. District Judge Brett Ludwig noted the serious nature of Summers’ conduct and the need for adequate deterrence when handing down the sentence.

In addition to his prison sentence, Summers was ordered to pay more than $1.1 million in restitution and serve one year of supervised release. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Brad Schimel stated that tax fraud is a serious crime that steals from all Americans who work hard and pay their taxes honestly, and that those who commit such crimes can expect to face federal prison time.

The case highlights the importance of honest tax preparation and the consequences of cheating the system. As the IRS continues to crack down on tax fraud, individuals and businesses must ensure that they are in compliance with tax laws and regulations to avoid similar outcomes.
