Jasmeika Simon, Tax Fraud, Wisconsin 2022

⏱ 2 min read

Jasmeika Simon, a Milwaukee woman, has been sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison for running a tax preparation business that filed hundreds of false and fraudulent returns. Between 2022 and 2024, Simon submitted over 300 individual income tax returns to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) containing false information designed to inflate clients’ tax refunds. She operated as an independent contractor for a Georgia-based tax preparation company, recruiting clients through word-of-mouth and Facebook advertising. Simon’s motive was to collect fees from clients, and her actions resulted in a significant loss to honest Americans.

Simon’s scheme involved using fabricated items such as business expenses, Sick and Family Leave Credits, Fuel Credits, and ordinary dividends to artificially increase refund amounts. She often prepared returns with minimal input from the taxpayers, making it easier to include false information. The IRS Criminal Investigation unit discovered Simon’s fraud and brought the case to the U.S. Attorney’s office for prosecution.

U.S. District Judge Brett Ludwig imposed the sentence, emphasizing the seriousness of Simon’s conduct and the need for punishment to deter others from engaging in similar fraud. In addition to the prison term, Simon was ordered to pay over $250,000 in restitution and serve one year of supervised release following her prison term.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter J. Smyczek, and the investigation was conducted by the IRS Criminal Investigation unit. The sentencing serves as a warning to those who would engage in tax fraud, as the government takes these crimes seriously and will pursue those who steal from honest Americans.
