A retired St. Louis teacher was brutally scammed out of $735,137 by a man she trusted. Michael N. Jones, 40, was given power of attorney in March 2023 and immediately began draining her accounts. He made over $12,000 in purchases using her checking account and even used her credit card for OnlyFans subscriptions. The victim, now in an assisted living facility, was left with unpaid bills and eviction notices.
The indictment alleges that Jones used the stolen funds to buy multiple properties in St. Louis, Hillsboro, and East St. Louis. He also transferred large sums to his personal bank account and Cash App, using the money for food, trips, life coaching, and OnlyFans. The victim was evicted from her assisted living facility in November 2024, owing $38,535, and later moved to another facility where costs grew to $52,502.
Jones was indicted on April 29 with eight counts of wire fraud and pleaded not guilty. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. The U.S. Secret Service, Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, and Social Security Administration Office of Inspector General investigated the case.
The case is a stark reminder of the dangers of financial exploitation, particularly against vulnerable seniors. As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jolene Taaffe.
