William Charles Franklin, Hate Crime Against Postal Worker, Georgia 2023

MACON, Ga. – William Charles Franklin, 37, of Tennille, Georgia, has been sentenced to serve over five years in prison for a hate crime attack on a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier. The sentence includes 66 months behind bars, followed by three years of supervised release and $5,101.74 in restitution, imposed by U.S. District Judge Marc Treadwell.

In March, Franklin was found guilty at trial of obstruction of the mails, assault upon a federal officer, aggravated assault upon a federal officer, and retaliating against a witness. The court also enhanced his sentence for hate crime violations in each of these counts, with no parole in the federal system.

“We will seek justice for victims of hate crimes,” said U.S. Attorney William R. “Will” Keyes. “Letter carriers, federal employees, and all citizens have the right to live and work in peace and safety.”

Washington County Sheriff Joel Cochran expressed disappointment in Franklin’s actions and emphasized the community’s commitment to unity against such crimes. Inspector Rodney M. Hopkins of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) Atlanta Division echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the postal service’s dedication to protecting its employees.

Court documents revealed that on June 11, 2024, the USPIS received a complaint from a letter carrier who had been threatened and racially insulted by Franklin. The confrontation was recorded by the letter carrier, who documented Franklin’s aggressive behavior and threats. On December 3, 2024, the same letter carrier’s vehicle was struck with a harrow attached to a tractor, causing significant damage.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office and USPIS tracked down the tractor involved in the incident to Franklin’s property, where it had been abandoned. Franklin faces a bleak future as he begins his sentence for his despicable actions against a postal worker who was simply doing his job.
