A 52-year-old Texas man was caught driving a stolen vehicle with kilogram quantities of cocaine, and now he’s headed to the slammer. Jerry D. Smith was stopped by Louisiana State Police on August 28, 2022, for a traffic infraction, but the traffic stop turned into a major bust.

Smith was driving from Texas to New Orleans with the intent to sell cocaine, according to court documents. When troopers searched the vehicle, they found the kilogram quantities of cocaine hidden inside.

Smith admitted to his role in the crime and pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute cocaine. On April 16, 2026, U.S. District Judge Carl J. Barbier sentenced Smith to 63 months in prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release and a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.

The investigation was led by Homeland Security Investigations, the Louisiana State Police, and the Kenner Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Lynn E. Schiffman handled the prosecution.
