Vernon Sweeney Jr., 52, of Tickfaw, Louisiana, has entered a guilty plea for the possession of child pornography, according to United States Attorney Duane A. Evans.
Sweeney was nabbed by Louisiana State Police and U.S. Department of Homeland Security on October 12, 2017, during a search warrant execution at his residence. Authorities discovered several devices containing graphic images of prepubescent children being sexually exploited.
This conviction comes as no surprise to law enforcement; Sweeney was previously convicted in Tangipahoa Parish Criminal District Court for pornography involving juveniles on August 1, 2012. His prior offense now carries a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years imprisonment and up to twenty years behind bars, with life supervision to follow.
Sentencing is scheduled for July 12, 2018, before U.S. District Judge Eldon E. Fallon. The case was part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched by the DOJ in May 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
U.S. Attorney Evans commended the efforts of Homeland Security Investigations and the Louisiana State Police for their work on this investigation. Assistant U. S. Attorney Brian M. Klebba, Project Safe Childhood Coordinator and Fraud Section Chief, is handling the prosecution.
