BECKLEY, W.Va.
Troy Covington, a 20-year-old inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution Beckley, has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for possessing a weapon in prison.
On February 8, 2020, a staff member with the FCI Beckley found a handcrafted weapon, commonly referred to as a ‘shank,’ concealed in a pair of shorts Covington was wearing.
The ‘shank’ was a four-inch piece of plexiglass sharpened to a point on one end, with a handle made of tape on the other end. Covington admitted that the shank was designed and intended to be used as a weapon.
United States Attorney Mike Stuart announced the sentencing, commending the staff of the Federal Bureau of Prisons for their vigilant efforts to maintain a secure environment within correctional facilities.
Covington was sentenced to 12 months in prison, to run consecutively to the sentence he currently is serving, and three years of supervised release following his imprisonment.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, with United States District Judge Frank W. Volk imposing the sentence. Assistant United States Attorney Timothy D. Boggess handled the prosecution.
