Rodney William Gipson, a 61-year-old truck driver from Houston, was caught smuggling 24 illegal aliens in his truck at the Falfurrias Border Patrol checkpoint in Corpus Christi, Texas, on February 19. Instead of hauling its supposed cargo of carrots, Gipson’s tractor-trailer was found to be concealing the group of undocumented immigrants. Gipson, who has nearly 30 years of experience as a commercial truck driver, admitted to knowingly or recklessly disregarding the fact that he was transporting illegal aliens.
The discovery was made after a K-9 unit alerted to the rear of the trailer, prompting a secondary inspection. Gipson claimed he was transporting a load from the Rio Grande Valley to Houston, but the cargo document showed the truck was supposed to be carrying carrots. The investigation was conducted by Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations.
Gipson has pleaded guilty to the charges and is permitted to remain on bond pending sentencing, which will be set at a later date before U.S. District Judge David S. Morales. He faces up to five years in federal prison and a possible $250,000 maximum fine.
The case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating human trafficking, cartels, and transnational criminal organizations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Griffith is prosecuting the case.
