A Tyler, Texas man, John Matthew Emerson, 42, has pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography, a crime committed while he was on supervised release for a prior conviction. The guilty plea was entered on July 21, 2026, before U.S. Magistrate Judge K. Nicole Mitchell in the Eastern District of Texas. Emerson was found with a cellular phone containing child pornography, sparking the latest charges. The investigation was led by the Department of Homeland Security-Homeland Security Investigations.
Emerson’s case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project aims to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the internet and to identify and rescue victims.
Emerson faces up to 20 years in federal prison. His sentencing will be determined by the court based on advisory sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors after the completion of a presentence investigation by the U.S. Probation Office. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Alan Jackson.
