8 Indicted for Stealing 19 Rental Cars in Nationwide Scheme
A brazen crime ring has been busted in St. Louis, with 8 individuals indicted on charges of stealing at least 19 rental cars worth over $1.1 million in a nationwide scheme.
The indictment, unsealed on Wednesday, alleges that the group, led by Tyrell A. Oliver, 38, of Atlanta, and Steven B. Matthews, 39, of Atlanta, used stolen credit card information and identities to reserve rental cars and then pick them up, never returning them.
The conspirators, which included Shawnta B. Fonseca, 32, of New York, Reginald M. Glenn, 35, of New York, Rashad Holder, 33, James E. McGhaney, 34, Marlique J. McGhaney, 33, and Daquasia M. Robinson, 32, of New York, obtained stolen credit card information and personally identifying information belonging to multiple identity theft victims in the United States.
The indictment says Oliver and other co-conspirators paid individuals to pick up the vehicles, which were primarily SUVs. The group used fake driver’s licenses and counterfeit credit cards to pick up the vehicles at airports in the eastern United States and Midwest.
Special Agent in Charge Jay Greenberg of the FBI St. Louis Division said, “This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how criminals use people’s stolen identities.” He added, “Perpetrators can easily and cheaply buy an endless supply of personal and credit card information. While the company in this case was the direct victim, innocent people were initially accused of theft because their stolen identities were used to commit the fraud.”
Charges set forth in an indictment are merely accusations and do not constitute proof of guilt. Every defendant is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty.
The FBI investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan Clow is prosecuting the case.
