A Boston federal court just wrapped up the case of Michael Murray, a 38-year-old former USPS postal clerk who made off with $8,553 in mail and government funds. Murray worked at the Beach Street Post Office in Revere and the Melrose Post Office.
Between September 2022 and July 2023, Murray used his position to steal hundreds of pieces of mail, including gift cards, cash, and checks worth $3,422. He also generated USPS money orders for his own use, totaling $5,131.
Murray pleaded guilty in January 2025 and was sentenced to 30 months’ probation and ordered to pay restitution and forfeiture. US Attorney Leah B. Foley and the US Postal Service Office of Inspector General made the announcement.
The investigation revealed Murray’s scheme, which spanned multiple months, involved him stealing mail from customers and then selling or cashing the contents. His actions compromised the trust of the postal service and put the public at risk.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Dustin Chao prosecuted the case, which was a significant win for law enforcement in the battle against white-collar crime.
