Vale Man Jailed for Hawk Slaughter
A Vale, South Dakota man has been brought to justice for his role in the slaughter of migratory birds in Meade County. Glen Schummer, aged 68, was sentenced to 1 year of unsupervised probation for his Lacey Act Violations.
According to sources, the investigation revealed that Schummer had set up 2 illegal pole traps on his property. Once the birds were trapped, he would shoot and kill them, or bludgeon them with a club before disposing of the bodies by throwing them into the nearby river.
It’s alleged that Schummer had been killing at least 10 migratory birds, including great-horned owls and hawks, for several years. His actions have left many in the community outraged and calling for stricter wildlife protection laws.
The investigation was carried out by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges leading the prosecution. Schummer will also have to pay $17,500 in restitution, a $500 fine, and a $10 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
As part of his sentence, Schummer is prohibited from hunting for the next year. The court’s decision has been welcomed by wildlife advocates who believe that harsher penalties are needed to deter such crimes.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of wildlife conservation and the need for stricter laws to protect our natural heritage. As the community comes to terms with the severity of Schummer’s crimes, many are left wondering how such atrocities can occur in our society.
U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson praised the efforts of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for their tireless work in bringing Schummer to justice. The case will undoubtedly serve as a warning to others who would seek to exploit and harm our wildlife for personal gain.
