WASHINGTON D.C. – Grimy Times has learned that the passage of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) 18 years ago has not been enough to end the suffering of countless victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.
According to Attorney General Eric Holder, VAWA has vastly improved the country’s ability to address these crimes and has provided access to needed services for thousands of victims.
However, despite this progress, the fight is far from over. Attorney General Holder is urging Congress to come together on a bipartisan basis to reauthorize VAWA, expanding access to justice for victims and strengthening law enforcement tools to hold violators accountable.
“Since VAWA became law 18 years ago today, VAWA has vastly improved our ability to address domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking and has helped countless victims of these crimes get access to needed services,” Attorney General Holder said in a statement.
Holder emphasized that the progress achieved under VAWA has not been inevitable and has been made possible by the tireless work of advocates, law enforcement, prosecutors, and others on the front lines of this effort.
The Office on Violence Against Women administers VAWA programs, providing states, territories, local and tribal governments, and nonprofit organizations with critical resources to initiate and sustain efforts to reduce and stop violence against women.
As Congress considers reauthorizing VAWA, Attorney General Holder is urging lawmakers to prioritize the needs of victims, who are often left to navigate a complex and sometimes hostile system in search of justice.
