Grimey Times exclusive: SAN ANTONIO – Venezuelan national Alexander Jose Barrios, also known as Alexander Jose Barrios-Pena, was apprehended on criminal charges stemming from a human smuggling conspiracy. The grim tale of illegal aliens being herded into the wild began near Dilley after Barrios’s vehicle was flagged for erratic driving by a U.S. Border Patrol agent.
According to court documents, the patrol agent observed Barrios’s vehicle swerving recklessly on HWY 85 and abruptly decelerating to perilously low speeds in a high-speed zone. When the emergency lights were activated, the suspect pulled off the road and swiftly stopped amidst a field of tall grass. Several occupants fled into the surrounding brush, but not before the agent apprehended Barrios and another passenger.
Backup agents arrived on scene and discovered a female subject hiding in the backseat. Barrios now faces one count of conspiracy to transport illegal aliens, with a potential sentence of up to ten years in federal prison if convicted.
U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons for the Western District of Texas announced the charges, noting that this case is part of Operation Take Back America—a national campaign aimed at combating illegal immigration and eliminating criminal organizations. The U.S. Border Patrol is leading the investigation into this distressing matter.
Although a criminal complaint is merely an accusation and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, Barrios’s fate rests in the hands of a federal district court judge who will consider the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors in determining any sentence.
