A brazen scheme to traffic fentanyl and other deadly controlled substances has landed a Volusia County veterinarian and her clinic in hot water, according to federal authorities.
Dr. Kerri Zavota, owner of Veterinary Emergency Center of East Volusia, allegedly failed to track and record the handling and dispensing of controlled substances, including fentanyl, at her clinic.
A concerned employee tipped off the DEA, which launched an investigation after discovering hundreds of alleged violations, including blank and inconsistent dispensing logs and inventories.
Now, the feds are suing Zavota and her clinic for 11 counts of violating the Controlled Substances Act.
The DEA and DOJ are leading the probe, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Conor Flynn prosecuting the case.
