PHILADELPHIA, PA – A brazen West Philadelphia carjacking has landed 19-year-old Xavier Peterson in federal custody, facing a potential life sentence. United States Attorney David Metcalf announced Peterson’s indictment today on charges of carjacking and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence, stemming from an incident earlier this year that left a couple shaken and without their vehicle.
The April 4th attack unfolded as Victim 1 parked his Subaru Crosstrek in West Philadelphia to drop off Victim 2. According to court filings, a masked assailant – identified as Peterson – approached the couple, brandishing a handgun and forcibly removing them from their vehicle. He then sped off, leaving the victims stranded and terrified.
The trail didn’t end there. Roughly 40 minutes after the carjacking, Victim 2 received a notification of fraudulent activity on her credit card, which had been inside the stolen Crosstrek. The transaction occurred in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, prompting a swift response from law enforcement in Delaware County. An hour after the initial crime, a Haverford Township police officer spotted the vehicle speeding along West Chester Pike, heading towards the Blue Route.
A traffic stop was initiated on Interstate 476, but Peterson refused to cooperate. He bailed from the vehicle, leaving three passengers behind, and attempted to flee on foot. A short pursuit led officers to discover Peterson hiding in the underbrush alongside the highway. Crucially, a loaded semiautomatic handgun was recovered near his location, directly linking him to the armed carjacking.
Peterson was ordered detained following a hearing this afternoon, and now faces a mandatory minimum sentence of seven years in prison if convicted. However, the charges carry a maximum possible sentence of life imprisonment – a stark reminder of the severity of armed carjacking and the federal government’s commitment to prosecuting such crimes. The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Philadelphia Police Department, Haverford Township Police Department, Radnor Township Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Assistant United States Attorney Michael Miller is prosecuting the case. It is crucial to remember that the indictment contains accusations, and Peterson is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
